PRINCE YAMADORI COSTUME (»MADAMA BUTTERFLY« - GIACOMO PUCCINI)

PRINCE YAMADORI COSTUME (»MADAMA BUTTERFLY« - GIACOMO PUCCINI) - Costume Treasures of the Vienna State Opera

Director: Josef Gielen
Costume: Designer Tsugouharu Foujita
Premiere: September 19, 1957
Size: EU 50/52*
The multi-part costume dominated by blue for the marriage-mad Prince Yamadori is supposed to represent his noble position and deliberately displayed wealth at first glance. It consists of headwear, an under-kimono, a kimono, a shirt and a belt. The role was consistently cast from the ensemble and because of the tessitura, both tenors and baritones could sing the role. KS Peter Jelosits (75 times), Siegfried Rudolf Frese (55 times), Hans Christian (50 times), Karl Friedrich (30 times) and KS Hans Peter Kammerer (27 times) sang the role most frequently.
Due to their frequent use - the opera was almost continuously in the repertoire - all the costumes had to be replaced by new, identical copies in 2006, which restored their original freshness, color and quality. A special feature about this costume: every single piece was made in Japan by selected masters from original Japanese kimono fabrics.
The costume is in very good condition and consists of headwear, under-kimono, kimono, shirt and belt.
*As the costume was made to measure for the singer, it may differ from the standard size.
