Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Works of Art - Part 1

Fukagawa Hachiman yamabiraki (The Opening of the Garden in the Hachiman Shrine of Fukagawa), sheet 68 from the "Meisho Edo hyakkei" series (Hundred Views of Edo), nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige ga, publisher Uoya Eikichi, dated 1857 (Ansei 4, month 8), censor seal: aratame, snake 8 (both latter indications are missing from the present sheet because it is trimmed on three sides along the border lines), especially in the central area in the blue above the middle trees the wood grain is very conspicuous, also visible at the top in the sunset, three-coloured title cartouche. Both features suggest a probable early print. The present sheet is quite yellowed, yet only minimally stained with album holes to the right side, one small damaged spot to the lower right margin and one to the left margin at the centre, smoothed creases, the upper left corner shows traces of the title cartouche of the sheet with which it was previously mounted together, compare sheet and details MFA, Boston acc. no. 11.35835 and no. 21.9472, 33.5 x 23.4 cm,(CT)
