Hiroshige (1797-1858)
Mishima Asagiri (Morning Mist in Mishima), sheet 12, station 11 from the "Tokaido gojusan tsugi no uchi-Hoeido Tokaido" series (The 53 Stations of Tokaido), nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige ga, publisher Taken-ouchi Magohachi, dated c. 1833-1834 (Tenpo 4-5), kiwame seal (here missing because all four pages are trimmed along the border lines, mid to late impression: the houses and the figures in the background on the left are barely perceptible (see Matthi Forrer, Hiroshige, Munich 1991, fig. 19). In the present sheet, both the third figure and the middle houses are clearly visible. Conversely, the three trees in the central section are only still visible in the upper third, the lines are slightly squashed, the red of the seat cushion is the same colour as the flesh tones of the men, the signature seal has already slightly faded, a centrefold is visible, slightly creased and stained, 4-5 traces of glue to the upper back margin, a tiny hole at the upper margin in the bokashi, 22.7 x 35.2 cm, framed,(CT)
