A rare and important 19th century Bamana 'Ndomo' Headdress. - Tribal Art

Mali. Wood. 70 cm. The N'domo is the first of the six grade initiation im Bamana culture, guiding the development of men from youth to old age to insure an ordered community life. The N'domo period lasts approximately five years and culminates in the boys' circumcision. The N'domo mask is said to depict primordial man in his uncircumcised, androgynous state. (VJ)
