Papua New Guinea. Around 1900. Wood. 226 cm. One of the most striking figures from Papua New Guinea, these open worked hooked figures represents the guardian of the sun, containing the spirits of warfare and hunting. Large Yipwon sculptures such as this one were owned by clans, hidden in secret caves whilst the smaller figures were individually owned and served as hunting amulets. (VJ)
