Edward Theodor Compton was a painter of Alpine motifs and a mountain climber. In 1863 he began with nature studies and visited various English art schools, incuding for a brief time the Royal Academy of Arts in London; thereafter he beacme an autodidact. From the age of 18 he lived with his family in Germany. Compton is famous for his more than 1700 mountain motifs which he rendered with impressive and at the same time very precise watercolours and drawings executed in pen and brush. His first watercolours aready show a high attention for brightness and light in his work. His manner to transform the diffuse qualities of water and air, ascending mist and fog into the representation of atmospheric mood and momentary emotions in his landscape is striking.
