Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione Follower of - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(1616–1670)
The Raising of Lazarus, gum tempera, on laid paper, on canvas, laid down on firm lined paper, 54,5 x 39 cm, unmounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Collection Consul Joseph Smith (1674–1770), Venice; Collection Adalbert Freiherr von Lanna 1836–1909), Prag, Lugt 2773, Private Collection Austria.

The present sketch was copied by Jean-Honoré Fragonard in a drawing which he executed presumably during his sojourn in Venice, when the sketch was still in the possession of Consul Joseph Smith. Fragonard’s drawing is preserved in the “Norton Simon Foundation” (F.1970.03.095.D) and shows the composition of the present study and the sketch of another figure. The sheet is inscribed “Benedetto G. Castiglione, Col. De Smith. Venise”. The present sheet is stylistically comparable with a series of drawings in the Albertina, which are attributed to the so-called “Master of the Satyr family”. They are executed in gum tempera as well and are repetitions and variations of compositions by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione. Among them is a horizontal version of “The Raising of Lazarus” (Inv. 2850), which is almost identical with two variants of the subject in Windsor Castle (RCIN 3833, 3834) attributed to Castiglione. Windsor castle also keeps a mirror-inverted variant of the present composition in upright format which is attributed to Salvatore Castiglione (1620– um 1677), who was the son of Giovanni Benedetto (RCIN 903832). In the background of the Windsor Castle drawing a column and a pedestal are faintly indicated, the figure group next to Christ is limited to a small number of people whereas the figure group in the present sheet was added with several more figures and extends from the two figures in rear-view in the foreground to the background, which lends the scene an additional moment of drama. The subject “Raising of Lazarus” was repeatedly executed by Castiglione which he depicted in several variants. The present drawing, however may not have been executed after a certain model image and may have been another one of the subject’s widely treated subject. It may derive from the hand of a follower of Castiglione of the 18th century.
