Konstantin Yegorovich Makovsky

Konstantin Yegorovich Makovsky - 19th Century Paintings

(Moscow 1839–1915 Petrograd)
Portrait of a Young Lady in Traditional Costume, signed C. Makovsky, inscribed in Cyrillic “Mussard’s Montage”, watercolour on paper mounted on cardboard, 28 x 22 cm, browned, slightly stained, passepartout, unframed

Provenance:
Private Collection Austria.

We are grateful to Dr. Olga Sugrobova-Roth for her scientific assistance.

The phrase “Mussard’s Montage” refers to a club founded by Eugene I. Mussard, secretary to H. I. H. Grand Princess Maria Nikolayevna, where concerts and readings were regularly held for charitable purposes. Once a week there were also evenings in which club members would draw from models and painted in watercolours. Even though Makowski was not himself a member of the club, he probably participated regularly, as did many other artists. The inscription suggests that the present portrait may have been painted in connection with Mussard’s club.
