A pendant to this goblet with presentoir is the goblet with saucer and a depiction of Captain Cook’s ships in the Antarctic Ocean. The goblet and its support are painted all around with scenes from James Cook’s second circumnavigation of the world in 1773. This is a clear example of the use of porcelain as pictorial support, as was popular in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The expeditions of Captain James Cook had not lost their relevance in the first half of the 19th century, during the Romantic period, and were also in keeping with the natural scientific and geographical interest of the time. 
The travel reports of his expeditions brought not only knowledge, but also new fashions. Count Cobenzl, for example, had a natural garden built on the Reisenberg near Vienna, where there was not only an "Alpine hut" but also an "Otahitic round hut".

James Cook, Oct. 27, 1728-Feb. 14, 1779 Hawaii, British explorer, joined the Royal Navy in 1755. On behalf of the British Admiralty and the Royal Geographical Society, he undertook three voyages of exploration: during his first in 1768-1771, he observed the passage of Venus in front of the sun on Tahiti on 3 June 3 1769, which enabled him to determine the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Cook called the surrounding islands “Society Islands” in honour of the Royal Geographical Society.
