Jan Miense Molenaer

Jan Miense Molenaer - Old Master Paintings II

(Haarlem circa 1610–1668)
Peasants drinking and smoking in an interior,
signed lower right: Jmolenaer,
oil on panel, 48 x 49.5 cm, framed

The present panel, depicting a lively tavern interior, with drinkers in half-unbuttoned jerkins gazing out at us, is a characteristically raucous, yet carefully registered work from Jan Miense Molenaer. The roaring fire in the darkened hearth in the right background, contrasting with the light falling from the left from an unseen window, beautifully articulates the pictorial space, while the foot-warmer, earthen-wear jugs and shining pewter tankard on the bench in the foreground show Molenaer’s painterly flair. Molenear was principally active in Haarlem, where he shared a studio with his with Judith Leyster, a pupil of Frans Hals, both he and Leyster were renowned for genre subjects such as the present picture.
