Lot No. 395

Francesco Guardi

Francesco Guardi - Old Master Paintings II

(Venice 1712–1793)
Saint Joseph,
oil on canvas, 41.5 x 33 cm, framed

Provenance:
Collection of Ferruccio Mestrovich (1921–2009), Venice;
Private European collection

We are grateful to Bo˙zena Anna Kowalczyk for confirming the attribution of the present painting.

The present painting shows Saint Joseph, with upwards turned eyes and his attribute, the white lilies, in his right hand. The saint is covered in an orange earthy-coloured cape in front of a green and blue background, defined by the use of open, vibrant brushstrokes. A subtle halo, which outlines the saint’s head, merges into the blue background.

Francesco Guardi gained wide popularity and was celebrated for his Venetian views. He was influenced by the models of Canaletto and Luca Carlevarijs, however, he developed a more light-handed and open style, the pittura di tocco, which gives his works an intuitive and ‘impressionist’ atmosphere. In the depictions of his saints, Guardi was clearly influenced by the work of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, whose saints in ecstasy attained wide popularity.
