The Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist,

The present work can be compared to a painting in the Staatsgalerie, Stockholm (inv. no. 717), alternately attributed to Francesco Ubertini Verdi, called il Bachiacca or to Pier Francesco Foschi, both pupils of Andrea del Sarto. This painting is stylistically closely related to the works of the three Ubertini Verdi brothers Bartolomeo (1484–1526/9), Francesco (1494–1557) and Antonio (1499–1572) and it is possible that it may have been created within the family studio by one of the sons of Francesco or Antonio.

The Madonna in the present painting is similar to the figure of Leda in the composition ‘Leda and the Swan’ attributable to the workshop of Bachiacca, conserved in the Villa I Tatti, Florence (published in: R. G. La France, ‘Workshop of Bachiacca: Leda and the Swan’, in: C. B. Strehlke, M. Israëls [eds.], ‘The Bernard and Mary Berenson Collection of European Paintings at I Tatti’, Florence 2015, pp. 109-113) and both have almost identical headwear. The Madonna’s hair falling over her shoulder, recall those of the Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist by Francesco Ubertini in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond (inv. no. 2007.16) and the Bracci Holy Family by Andrea del Sarto of 1525 in the Galleria Palatina, Florence (inv. no. 62).
