After his formal studies at the Academy in Prague, the artist Anton Ebert continued his education under the tutelage of Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller - his teacher’s influence remains indeed palpable in Ebert’s oeuvre until the 1880’s.
Ebert is best known for his idyllic genre paintings depicting harmonious country family life, particularly children, boasting of exceptional skill in capturing golden moments of innocence. In the following painting, the artist plays with the use of light to dramatize how the grandmother emerges from her dark convalescence into a sun-bathed patio. Her grandchildren are happily awaiting her return and gather around the door, in a scene of restored family bliss. The simplicity and joyful character of the work are typical of Ebert’s genre paintings.
