Étienne Jeaurat

Étienne Jeaurat - Old Master Paintings I

(Paris 1699–1789 Versailles)
A sculptor in his atelier,
signed and dated lower left: Jeaurat/p. 1764,
oil on canvas, 71.5 x 66 cm, unframed

Provenance:
Private collection, Germany

The present work, showing a sculptor in his atelier with the models and tools of his trade, is a typically varied and rich composition from the hand of Étienne Jeaurat. Famed for his raucous street scenes, and his interior scenes such as these, where so many artistic elements and diverse still lifes lead the eye, Jeaurat is known as the ‘French Teniers’ in reference to the genre scenes of the great Fleming active a century before, David Teniers the Younger. Jeaurat’s handling of light and human drama within interiors, as seen here, bear testament to such a complimentary comparison. A similar work The interior of an artist’s studio is conserved in the Frerens Art Gallery, Hull.

Orphaned at an early age, Jeaurat was entrusted to the care of Nicholas Vleughels, a Franco-Flemish painter and close friend of Antoine Watteau, who took Jeaurat to Rome with him. Classical architecture consequently appears in many of Jeaurat’s works. Jeaurat was principally active in Paris, exhibiting frequently at the Salon des Artistes at Le Louvre – then a royal residence rather than a museum. He became Chancellor of the Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture, and finally keeper of the King’s picture gallery at Versailles, crowning an illustrious career at the heart of the French eighteenth century artistic establishment.
