Asie Usu Male Figure
Baule, Ivory Coast, 19th c., wood, crusted patina of various organic materials, 47,5 cm high. Baule diviners (Komien) use these 'asie usu' figures to form a link between the physical and the spiritual world. Through incantations, the komien becomes possessed by the spirit residing in the figure, and this trance makes it clear to the diviner what the issues are, how they can be solved and what the future holds for his client.
