A Magnificent Cameroon Beaded Elephant Mask, kuo'si Society - Tribal Art

Cameroon, trade cloth, fibres, beads, 146 cm high. The long-beaded cloth under the face represents the trunk, the mask emulating an elephant. The Kuosi association, in the Bamileke region, performed during funerals and public ceremonies to ensure prosperity. Formerly a society of warriors, the Kuosi is now mostly a membership for the affluent. During performances, luxurious materials and royal symbols covered the Kuosi dancers' bodies, revealing their riches and prestige.
