Lot No. 92

A Massim 'Lagim' Splashboard

Papua New Guinea, wood, 44 x 53 cm. Part of the 'Kula' trade ring, the Massim people beautify the canoe to 'soften' the trading partners where the Kula ceremonial exchange takes place. The aesthetic qualities of well-executed canoe wood carvings are believed to enchant Kula partners, making them likely to give up their valuables. Massim splashboards are cut from a single piece of Ficus tree. The splashboard is carved in relief and decorated on the front side only. Visually, the splashboard has a central part with abstract motifs framed by two asymmetric volutes that spiral out and down to either side. In the middle of the board is an anthropomorphic figure flanked by two stylised fregat bird heads.

Provenance:
Francois Coppens, St. Niklaas.
