An Early Mangaia Adze


Cook Islands, mid 19th century, wood, stone, old collection label, 74 cm long. On the island of Mangaia, a southern island of the Cook Archipelago, this type of ceremonial adze is created to house the spirit god 'Mata Ariki', protector of the carvers. Adorned with a stacking of geometric motifs, stylised anthropomorphic figurations, this example still has the original binding of coconut fibres, highly esteemed, and sometimes woven by the chiefs.
