Man Ray *
(Philadelphia 1890-1976 Paris) “Compass”, 1920/1976, object in a frame, on a label on the reverse the handwritten monogram MR, no. 97 from the edition of 110 numbered examples, 49 x 34 x 3 cm, (EW)
Certificate:
Edizione Gallerie d’Arte Cortina, Milan
Shortly before leaving New York for Paris in 1921, Man Ray created a number of objects the construction of which questions the authority of logic and science in favour of imagination. “Compass” is one of them. Both the gun and magnet mounted on a wall are very large, in contrast to a thin compass needle. In Ray’s view, the energy fields to which the magnet could react are destructive and imponderable. The artist photographed the original (a unique piece) and subsequently destroyed it. Only one photo edition of this work from 1920 exists today. In 1976, the artist produced a multiple after the original in an edition of 110.
