Jiří (Georg) Dokoupil *

Jiří (Georg) Dokoupil * - Contemporary Art II

(born in Krnov in 1954)
Untitled, 2018, signed twice Dokoupil and inscribed twice with the measurements on the overlap, soap-lye and pigments on canvas, 100 x 110 cm, on stretcher

Provenance:
Private collection, Germany - directly from the artist

The German-Czech artist Jiří (Georg) Dokoupil creates a completely new production method for his works for each series. He has been refining the production of his so-called Soap Bubble Paintings for more than thirty years.
With the help of a large metal hoop, he drops the specially produced soap suds, which are mixed with bright and shimmering colour pigments, from a ladder onto the canvases lying on the floor in his studio.

“A step into a painterly no man’s land, on the way to a re-invention of painting.”

Just as chance plays a role in the creation of each Soap Bubble Painting, the colours of the soap bubbles on the works also change depending on the viewer's point of view and the angle of the light. Dokoupil's Soap Bubble Paintings thus preserve the moment of gentle movement beyond their process of creation and can be discovered anew in every place they are hung.
