In these years, the sea became his favourite motif. He humorously records the remarks of the locals in his diary: “The weather is so bad that you wouldn’t want to chase a dog down the alley. And Professor Jungnickel goes down to the sea and paints the storm...”, quoted in: Spielvogel, p. 173
