The son of a financial officer, Franz Kopallik, was born in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt. He received his formation as a drawing instructor at the Viennese School for Applied Arts under Michael Wieser and practiced this profession until his retirement. He spent his free time for painting history and church paintings; later he specialized in depicting architecture and landscapes in watercolour. His works made him were very popular and sought after. The city of Vienna as well as the Imperial family and high aristocracy ordered pictures from him. On behalf of Prince Francis of Liechtenstein, who was Austro-Hungarian ambassador at that time, Kopallik visited Zsarist Russia in 1898. He painted motifs of Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Zarskoje Selo, Oranienburg and in the Grand Duchy Finland.

The present watercolour may depict a landscape in the surrounding of Vyborg.
