Lot No. 283

Series of 22 watercolours with historical depictions of the history of the Beydeals de Zittaert family,

watercolour on paper, each with description (partly trimmed), each 25 x 28 cm, late 18th / early 19th century, (Lu)

An extremely interesting series with historical images depicting important historical events in Burgundy and the Austrian Netherlands. The commissioner was probably Charles Jean-Baptiste Beydeals de Zittaert (died in Vienna in 1811). He held the office of the King of Arms of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The individual watercolours partly refer to the Order of the Golden Fleece (among others, depiction of the first chapter of the Order under Duke Philip the Good, reception as heraldic king in Vienna). Other depictions include the entry of Emperor Maximilian II into Brussels, a banquet of Emperor Charles V with King Philip of Naples, the siege of the city of Brussels by the Count of Flanders, Henry III Count of Brabant in tournament, the entry of Pope Innocent II into Brussels, the wedding of John of Burgundy.
