Louis Antoine Henri of Bourbon, Duke of Enghien (1772 - 1804), was kidnapped from Germany to France at the behest of Napoleon Bonaparte, and executed after a mock trial. The kidnapping and subsequent execution caused great outrage across Europe. The Minister of Police, Joseph Fouché, made the famous aphorism: “It is worse than a crime, it is a mistake”.
