Follower of François Boucher

Follower of François Boucher - Old Master Paintings

‘La Baigneuse’, female nude on the shore of a pond,
oil on canvas, 47 x 36.5 cm, framed

The present painting is based on one of the most popular compositions by Boucher, many autograph versions and copies of which are known. What is probably the most well-known version is the one Boucher painted in 1751 for the Marquise de Pompadour (today in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, see Ananoff and Wildenstein, no. 377). A drawing by the hand of Boucher that was sold at Christie’s, New York, on 24 January 2008 as lot 82 (ex J. P. Haseltine Collection) can be considered the preliminary design for this composition.
