Lot No. 7

Hispano-Flemish School, late 15th Century

The Coronation of the Virgin,
oil on canvas laid down on panel, gold ground, 151.5 x 84 cm, unframed

Provenance:
art market, Paris, 2018;
where acquired by the present owner

The present painting relates to both Northern and Spanish painting traditions of the fifteenth century. The work depicts the Virgin in a grand golden halo with radiating tongues of fire carefully applied with punch work. This abundant punch work applied on the gold ground suggest that the painting could be of Spanish origin. The Virgin, however, is surrounded by four angels in white garments. The use of white for the robes is more common for angels depicted in the early Netherlandish painting tradition. The four seem to lift the Virgin, whose feet rest on a crescent moon carried by a fifth angel wearing a soft pink garment. Dressed in a sumptuous brocaded and gilded mantle worn over a green dress decorated with golden rosettes, the Virgin is depicted with her hands folded and her gaze lowered. Her golden crown with its twelve stars, represents the twelve apostles. The whole composition is surrounded by a blue scalloped border, resembling clouds.

The artist of the present work prepared the panel with canvas to strengthen the support.
