Extract from the certificate issued by Dr Sybille Moser-Ernst:

In 1864 Unterberger moved from Düsseldorf to Brussels, which he chose as his permanent residence until his death, which apparently gave rise to the erroneous opinion that he had even taken Belgian citizenship and was now to be described as a ‘naturalised Belgian’, having moved to Brussels from Schaerbeek, a suburb of Brussels, in 1868. Towards the end of the 1870s, he created a view of Amalfi in glorious sunshine - as a kind of counterpart to his views of Norway, which focused on the light and atmosphere of the north.
This Amalfi painting, which has equally become a hallmark of Unterberger’s work, was repeated by the artist himself in several replicas. Sometimes he changed the staffage. Most of the time, we see a salon bourgeoisie enjoying the carefree Italian folk life in the foreground, in a back or side view, a marvelous coastal landscape in the afternoon sun.
