Karl Raupp trained in Darmstadt under the landscape painter August Lucas and later attended the Munich Academy until 1869. Raupp loved spending time in nature in order to depict it as realistically as possible. He discovered Lake Chiemsee and the Fraueninsel in 1869, which became the source of much of his inspiration. His subjects are depicted in captivating situations or during meaningful interactions. Raupp painted women, girls, and children in full sunlight playing idyllic games on the shore, on moored boats, sailing on the lake, or, with particular fondness, battling the waves. He was particularly interested in the ever-moving, changing nature of water, as well as families and the use of light on his subjects. He was described as "Chiemsee Raupp" for the way he played with light and colour to highlight the children in the boat and bring a certain brightness and cheerfulness to the picture, as well as creating a clear theme for the painting.
