In the naval battle of Lissa (modern-day Vis, Croatia), the Austrian and Italian fleets engaged in combat on 20 July 1866 during the Third Italian War of Independence. Despite being both numerically and technologically superior, the Italian forces were ultimately defeated by Wilhelm Freiherr von Tegetthoff and his troops. Their victory not only secured Austrian dominance in the Adriatic but also upheld Habsburg control over Veneto.
