321,750 EUROS FOR RARE WRISTWATCH

3 December 2021, best watch auction ever at Dorotheum - top price for absolute rarity by A. Lange & Söhne

It ticks all the boxes. An extremely sought-after wristwatch by A. Lange & Söhne Glashütte I/SA Tourbillon Pour le Mérite ref. 701.005, produced in an edition of only 200 pieces in around 1995, changed hands for an outstanding 321,750 euros at Dorotheum’s auction on 3 December 2021. This top watch comes from an Austrian private collection and was knocked down to a bidder on the telephone.

A live bidder won a bidding battle for a Patek Philippe Nautilus, ref. 3700/1, c. 1977/78 (€ 128,000). The design of this legendary sports watch is by Gérald Genta and is based on the shape of a porthole.

Overall, this watch sale has met an extremely high demand, becoming the best in the history of the auction house. “CPO (certified pre-owned) watches are currently an extremely interesting, steadily growing market for both consignors and buyers, with very high potential”, says Astrid Fialka-Herics, Head of Dorotheum’s Watch and Jewellery Department -  “our latest auction shows that we are in the top international league in the watch sector.”
