A JOYRIDE THROUGH AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY

Auction “Classic Cars and Automobilia” at Dorotheum, 24th June 2017

A silver-coloured Arch-Jaguar, a veteran of the race track, leads the impressive fleet of vehicles presented at the upcoming auction of "Classic Cars and Automobilia" on 24th June 2017 at the Dorotheum "Fahrzeug- und Technikzentrum" Vienna Vösendorf. The S.S. 100 Jaguar 2 ½ Litre, one of the cars that the Jaguar legend was founded upon, epitomises the pre-war sports car and has been estimated at € 290,000 to € 390,000. First produced in 1936, only 198 cars of this type were ever made. Today the S.S. 100 can be sure of its prominent place in automotive history for its combination of beauty and speed – as, in this particular example, the car was amply able to compete not once, but twice at the Mille Miglia race.

Pure elegance
Another equally representative and elegant classic of the pre-war period, is the blue and cream-coloured Horch 853 Sportcabriolet of 1938, which might also have suited the ambitious traveller. It indulges its passengers with heavy leather seating, precious wood, and delicate interior. The elaborately restored luxury vehicle is priced at €370,000 to €470,000. A white Mercedes-Benz 300 S Coupé dating from 1953 embodies pure elegance. Of the total 560 cars produced in this series, only 216 were of the elegant coupé model (€340,000 – 440,000).

More of a contemporary classic than an old master in auto-history, the silver coloured Porsche 911 S 2.2 Litre comes with an engine that is revving to go – it is THE model for the true sports car driver (€160,000 – 220,000). This trip down Porsche memory lane continues with two 356 models – an Irish green Porsche 356 1600 SC with only one previous owner and a Porsche 356 A dating from 1959 (both €85,000 – 125,000) – to a 993 Carrera 4S from 1996, the swan-song of the era of the air-cooled 911s €80,000 – 110,000). Quite another aspect of the company's history is represented by the Super N 308, a racer in its own right – the race-car of the tractor-world (€15,000 – 25,000).

Micro cars und Indians
Playing in a league of their own is the auction's collection of micro cars which without exception sport a red paint job. The charming cars include a 1954 Steyr-Fiat 500 C “Topolino“ (€8,000 – 12,000), a 1957 Goggomobil TS 400 Cabriolet (€12,000 – 18,000) and a red and white Nash Metropolitan, a small and very chic car (€7,000 – 10,000).

The Mercedes 190 Ponton from 1958 is a part of art history as much as it is car history because it was originally purchased by the famous Austrian sculptor Fritz Wotruba who drove it right up to two years before his death.

An absolute rarity among motorcycles, which is in its original condition and has been in the hands of only one Austrian owner, is the red  Indian Scout dating to 1936. The proud Indian comes with an impressive history and has no reason to hide its age (€26,000 – 28,000). The motorcycle selection ranges from the Sunbeam Model 1 of the 1920s, to a legendary English Vincent and a Honda CBX, which in the late 70s set new standards with its six-cylinder engine.

The auction features a total of 69 two-wheeled and four-wheeled classic vehicles. Automobilia are once again offered via an online auction, which will close at 6.00 pm on 27th June.
