After the most successful spring season in more than 300 years history of the Dorotheum, the third auction week from 11^th to 13^th October 2011 provides, amongst others, art work with significant provenance - including a painting from 1846 by Franz Ludwig Catel, which belonged to the Tsar family, old master paintings from important European collections plus a pair of porcelain vases that the empress Joséphine Bonaparte gave as a present to Queen Luise of Prussia.

Italian Rides
11^th October 2011 - 19^th Century Paintings

From the possessions of Alexandra Fedorowna, the spouse of <st2:title w:st="on">Tsar</st2:title> <st2:givenname w:st="on">Nikolai</st2:givenname> <st2:sn w:st="on">I.</st2:sn> (1798 - 1860), originates one of the most important works of the auction week. It is assumed that the German painter Franz Ludwig Catel painted a portrait of the Tsar family, including the grand duchess Olga Nikolaevna and her "husband to be" Karl Friedrich Alexander, crown prince of Württemberg, in his painting "A Stroll in Palermo”. The reason for the journey was the illness of Alexandra Fedorowna, who was Charlotte of Prussia before her marriage. The sky, the ocean and the rock formations occupy two thirds of the atmospheric picture. A watercolour from that time shows that the painting with the Italian "Catelli" sign was in the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo in the rooms of the Tsarina Alexandra. Now, the important picture, that subsequently has been handed on to the family von Württemberg, is going under the hammer in the 19^th Century paintings auction on 11^th October 2011 with a valuation price of 250,000 to 350,000 Euros.  

Dark Side
Italy, not only known in Goethe's terms as "the land where the lemon trees bloom", is regarded simply as a source of inspiration and a place of longing for European artists in 19^th Century. The picture "Fishermen in Naples Harbour" (€130,000 - 180,000) provides an authentic prime example of romantic painting. Inspired by his artist friend Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus portrays a group of people in the light of a full moon, which accentuates the figures. Carus, who counted Goethe, Ludwig Tieck and Alexander von Humboldt as friends, who alongside his career as a painter was an anatomist, gynecologist and psychologist, and also interested in the "dark side of life". With his "magical idealism" one regards him as the philosopher of "German idealism". Oswald Achenbach's "Evening on the Coast” has an equally romantic atmosphere. The Viennese Robert Russ was fascinated by Venice like so many others. The Dorotheum auction already has a "View of the Palazzo del Camello in Venice” (€40,000 - 60,000). Also, the Austrians have salon paintings (Makarts "Musical Entertainment”, €30,000 - 40,000), alpine glow (Gauermann's "Shepherds with goats and bull” €70,000 - 90,000), portraiture (Waldmüller's "Portrait of Edward Silberstein" €25,000 - 35,000) and flowers (Marie Egner "In the Arbour" €80,000 - 120,000). Eugen von Blaas contributed a delightful salon painting, which draws the attention to the private atmosphere  of a shoe sale (€100,000 - 150,000). Fausto Zonaro was a Contantinopel scene (€80,000 - 120,000). The ever popular portraits of girls are amongst others by Alfred Stevens and Konstantin Jegorowitsch Makowsky.  

Flowers and Bay Wreaths
12^th October 2011 -  Old Master Paintings

The historical painter Marc Antonio Franceschini knew how to combine baroque dynamism with classical austerity and bleakness splendidly. A prime example of his paintings, which catered to sensation and glory in Genoa, Mantua, Bologna and also in Vienna, in the Liechtenstein Palace, is in the Dorotheum auction with the paintings by the old masters on 12^th October 2011. The picture from 1678/79 shows the motif of "The Rape of Europa”.  The woman Europa sits on a white bull, which Zeus has transformed himself into; both have crowns of flowers. A humorous detail on the edge: one of the putti tries to remove the crown of flowers from the bull's head (€200,000 - 300,000). 

Further examples of the Bolognese paintings, of which many works with significant provenance, enrich the auction. From Guido Reni comes a bay wreathed Apollo, from Guercino no less a figure than the holy Father himself - a soft clayey, as well as bold composed portrait of an old man with cherub, scepter and globe (€200,000 - 300,000).   

Both magnificent fruit and flower still lifes by Giovanni Stanchi come from an important European collection. The autumnal fruits are within reach, as the ideal propagated by Zeuxis on still lifes states (both €200,000 - 300,000). "Sofonisba" by Trissino is the first tragedy written in Italian. Cesare Dandini retains every dramatic moment in his painting of the same name, before Sofonisba drinks the cup of poison (€50,000 - 70,000). Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini portrays again a "Rebecca at the well” (€150,000 - 200,000). Jean Baptiste Vanmour, dispatched in 1699 from the French embassy to Istanbul, depicts in detail a "The Sultan’s Progress” (€120,000 - 150,000). 

The early panel painting is represented amongst others by Simone de Filippos' "The coronation of Mary” (€60,000 - 80,000). Works by significant artists of Dutch paintings enrich the offers of the Old Master Paintingss: from Breughel I there is the Rape of Proserpina, by Jan Brueghell II a landscape with farmers and by Joachim Antonisz Wtewael a multi-figured "Adoration of the Shepherds” (€300,000 - 400,000). Characteristically van Ruysdael's clayey atmospheric "River landscape with Duck Hunt” (€160,000 - 200,000). Those also prominent are a Jerome portrait by Jusepe de Ribera, an image of a girl by Jean-Baptiste Greuze, a portrait of a man of Hans von Aachen plus architecture fantasies of Seckel. 

Say it with vases …
12^th and 13^th October 2011 - Works of Art, Silver, glass and porcelain, sculptures, furniture

The climax of the antiques action is undoubtedly the pair of vases of the royal porcelain factory in Berlin: the vases were a present from Queen Luise of Prussia to the former consul Joséphine Bonaparte. The production was delayed so the present reached her after she became the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. Architectural views and fauna from park Joséphines, Malmaison, are depicted on the vases (€80,000 - 120,000).  For the world exhibition in 1873 the architect Theophil von Hasen designed a tabouret (for storing wood). The object was later coated in material and is next to a baroque tabernacle, which was owned by the Baroness Fanny Todesco, and it is a highlight of the furniture auction (€3,000 - 5,000 and €20,000 - 30,000 respectively). The decorated gilded bronze roman centerpiece with alabaster figures and Pietra Dura work is like an enclosed mini-park (€40,000 - 60,000).

14^th October - Jewellery
The sparkling highlight of the auction week is the jewellery auction, amongst others a diamond ring with 3.59ct and a diamond bracelet ca. 14ct (€30,000 - 45,000 and 18,000 - 25,000 respectively).
