MADONNA AND MYTH

Top Prices for Platzer and Carracci at Dorotheum Old Masters Auction

International attendance and an auction hall filled to capacity reflected the considerable interest in the paintings presented at the auction of old masters, held at Vienna's Palais Dorotheum on 15th October 2013.

A graceful and gorgeously detailed „Madonna at Prayer“ by Annibale Carracci, one of the founding fathers of Italian Baroque painting, was appreciated to the order of 389,300 Euro (Cat. No. 548), with the same amount being reached by a Christ scene by Lorenzo Lotto. A central work by Austria's best known and probably most famous old master painter, Johann Georg Platzer, the "Concert at the Palace" in oils on copper far exceeded its estimate when sold to a Swiss bidder for 317,500 Euro (Cat. No. 543).

Likewise going for more than the expected price were the proverbial „Casting Pearls before Swine“ by Pieter Brueghel II (€ 268,700, Cat. No. 519) as well as Paris Bordon's mythological „Neptune and Amphitrite“ (€ 219,900, Cat. No. 566).

Dorotheum was pleased to host another world record sale: A pair of architectural paintings - „Atrium and Stairs“ and „Imperial Spa“ by Stefano Orlandi – sold for 195,500 Euro, by some margin the best result for works by this Bolognese artist (Cat. No. 577).

Guido Reni's „Fortuna“, the top-ranked lot, was sold directly right after the auction.
