OF CATS AND DRAGONS

Precious rare carpets, splendid tapestries and exceptional textiles at the Dorotheum auction on 21st September 2015

To mark the 10th special auction in the oriental carpet, textiles, and tapestry category - to be held at Dorotheum Vienna on 21st September 2015 - this anniversary event will present a particularly fine selection of 228 lots, including collector’s carpets, modern carpets, and textiles from various parts of the world.

Animal Spirit

So rare as to be actually unique, a Senneh tapestry from North West Persia is decorated with 18 panels containing unusual scenes featuring cats. Dorotheum expert Wolfgang Matschek has estimated this tapestry of superior workmanship and dating to the late 19th century at 18,000 to 22,000 Euro.

Another piece from Northern Persia, a Teheran carpet dating to the period around 1930, depicts fantastic bird- and floral scenes (€ 10,000 - 12,000), while paired chickens and doves perch on a delicately knotted „Khamseh“ Ainalu carpet from South West Persia made in the second half of the 19th century (€ 9,000 - 12,000), and ten lions on a dark blue ground stand out on a North West Persian Bidjar Gerus from the early 20th century (€ 7,000 - 8,000).

Spring, water, rain, fertility, imperial might - in the Far East dragons are considered to bring good fortune: The Ninghsia dragon carpet from West China, 19th century, will hopefully favour the auction with 12,000 to 16,000 Euro.

Gates of Paradise

The selection also shows off a kazak from the South-West Caucasus, measuring 230 x 172 cm and dating to the period around 1870. This heavy large-format village carpet with deep pile and fine old colours has been estimated at 8.000 to 12.000 Euro. The white prayer reserve is contoured in green while the tiered section at the bottom symbolises the entry into paradise

Additional highlights will include an important three-medallion khotan carpet from the 18th century, an early sharköy kilim, a heriz and a silk Keshan Souf, exceptional tapestries and textiles, such as a silk cloak from England (ca. 1600) or a man’s camelhair and cotton coat embroidered with wool and silk that was probably made in West Turkestan.
