OLD MISTRESSES IN DEMAND

€624,000 for a rediscovered painting by Fede Galizia

One of the rare female protagonists in the Old Master world was the focus of the auction at Dorotheum on 3 May 2023. A painting by the Lombard artist Fede Galizia, entitled Judith and Holofernes, achieved double its estimate, reaching €624,000. This previously unknown, museum-quality masterpiece, is an important, signed rediscovery by this artist.

Fede Galizia (1578-1630) is one of the small number of women artists of the 17th century who have recently regained much-deserved esteem amongst art historians. She was one of very few early female painters who achieved international recognition, even during her own lifetime.

Elsewhere in the sale, a number of further works were sold to international collections and museums. The early Italian and German paintings were also particularly in demand.
