RECORD-BREAKING AUCTION OF CONTEMPORARY ART AT DOROTHEUM

Lucio Fontana makes a million, new world record for Mario Schifano

The evening auction of contemporary art at Dorotheum on 27th November 2013 turned into a resounding success: It was, in fact, the best auction in this category ever recorded at Dorotheum, Continental Europe's largest auction house. This exciting event was distinguished by the presence of numerous international bidders, perpetually busy telephone lines, and rapid appreciation during the bidding.

The top lot, a yellow canvas with a vertical cut, „Concetto spaziale“ Attesa (68 T 77) by Lucio Fontana went to a French buyer for 1,071,389 Euro following a protracted bidding battle. Bidders also hotly contested Mario Schifano's emblematic square „Incidente“ (Accident), which was finally sold for 446,800 Euro, a new world record for a work by this artist. Abstract works by Alighiero Boetti, Enrico Castellani, Agostino Bonalumi, Paolo Scheggi, and Dadamaino likewise achieved prices that were significantly higher than expected.

291,280 Euro were paid for the abstract canvas „Le four“ by the Portuguese-French painter Maria Helena Vieira da Silva.
