Top prices for old master paintings – second-most successful spring auction.


The auction of old master paintings on 21st April 2015, signalled the highly successful start to the Dorotheum spring season.

Be it Jan or Pieter, the I or the II – works by the Brueghel family of painters made a strong showing and were met with commensurate interest. The „Rest by the Windmill“ by Jan Brueghel I saw bidding climb to 523,446 Euro, while a „Couple Fishing“, a tondo with a diameter of only 19.1 cm, by Pieter Brueghel II was sold for 552,000 Euro. The many-figured paintings by Jan Brueghel II. were likewise successfully knocked down, among them a joint work with Pieter van Avont, the „Allegory of Taste“, which went for 224,046 Euro.

Sold for 575,516 Euro - more than ten times its estimate - Frans Pourbus II „Portrait of Prince Philipp Wilhelm of Orange, with breastplate and chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece” represents an early work by one of the foremost Flemish portrait painters of the 16th century.

The „Madonna of the Carnation“ by Giovan Battista Salvi, known as il Sassoferrato, rose to a final bid of 417,800 Euro.

At the end of the day, the auction brought in the second best result of any Dorotheum spring auction of old masters paintings to date.
