Art-historical discoveries shine at the auction of old master paintings

Sold for 711.300 Euro, a newly discovered painting by Jusepe de Ribera turned out to be the top-lot of the Dorotheum auction of old master paintings on 17th April 2013. The "Mocking of Christ" represents an important and significant addition to the œuvre of this major Spanish master. The drastically realistic scene was sold far above expectations (Cat. No. 602.).

A number of other art-historical discoveries likewise met with considerable interest and high prices: Giuseppe Maria Crespi's "Portrait of a Lady, allegory of Abundantia“ – depicting a woman holding a rose symbolising beauty – sold for several times its estimate at 366.300 Euro (Cat. No. 573). Jan Brueghel's II. „Lively village landscape with trees“ achieved the excellent result of 317.500 Euro (Cat. No. 632).
The sale of Cornelis van Cleve's „Virgin and Child, with St John and putti“ at 244.300 Euro marks a new world record for a painting by this artist (Cat. No. 566). The successful auction also saw significant price-appreciation for, among others, a skilfully staged rendition of "Joseph's Interpretation of Dreams" by the Italian master Alessandro Magnasco (€ 253.300, Cat. No. 610), as well as for Pietro Antonio Rotari, court painter to Tsarina Elisabeth I., and his portrait of a „Young woman in a red, fur-trimmed cloak“ (€ 201.600, Cat. No. 640).
At the end of the day, the old masters auction had become the second most successful such event at Dorotheum.
