Conceptual differences aside, "design" traces its origins back to the beginning of the 20th century. This is where the upcoming Dorotheum design auction on November 7th, 2018, takes its cue, inviting all interested parties to take part in a journey through the history of design right up to the present.
 
While Bauhaus provides a main focal point, the auction also features a strong presence of the work ofRon Arad. Born in Tel Aviv in 1951, the designer founded the design and production studio One Off in 1981, together with Caroline Thormann, and Ron Arad Associates in 1989. Dating to an early creative period of one of the 20th century's most influential designers, the prototype book shelf This Mortal Coilconsists of a bent helical steel strip, subdivided into individual shelf sections; it comes from a German private collection and is estimated at 100,000 to 150,000 Euro. The auction also offers a limited edition armchair Big Easy, with an estimated price of 40,000 to 60,000 Euro. Ron Arad created a number of limited edition studio pieces as well as sculptures designed for public spaces and also became known for his work for international companies such as Vitra, Fiam, Moroso, Alessi, Cappellini, Cassina, Magis, Kartell, and WMF. The Well Tempered Chair, an early series created for Vitra, is a fine example (€ 9,000 – 12,000).
 
The Bauhaus selection is highlighted with a rare and early chair, the 1927 Beugel Stoel. It was designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, and originally created during the 1930s for the firm Metz & Co. It comes from the collection of Frank Müser, who together with Alexander von Vegesack authored the seminal work on tubular steel furniture Deutsche Stahlrohrmöbel (€ 12,000 – 15,000).
 
The auction also presents objects from the collection of the renowned Viennese design retailer Peter Teichgräber. This part of his collection includes pieces by Massimo Iosa Ghini, George J. Sowden, Andrea Branzi, Anna Anselmi and Mario Terzic.

The contemporary design category features works by Gilbert Bretterbauer, Oskar Zieta, Luigi Colani, Patrick Rampelotto, Bernhard Hausegger, Eva Renée Nele Bode, Alfonzo Conzeta, and others.
