WORLD RECORD PRICE AT DOROTHEUM

1.137,800 euros for Old Master painting by Pieter Coecke van Aelst

Dorotheum’s Old Master Paintings sale on 9 June 2020 caused a fever of excitement when it achieved the world record price of 1.137,800 euros for an altarpiece by the Antwerp-based painter and polymath Pieter Coecke van Aelst. This Mannerist masterpiece, “The Adoration of the Magi”, created in 1523, was once owned by the King of the Netherlands, William II. Coecke van Aelst was the teacher and father-in-law of Pieter Brueghel the Elder.

This sale sends a positive signal to the art market.
As the first major international auction to take place live in the saleroom since the lockdown, it saw significant appreciation: four southern German altar panels depicting the Passion of Christ achieved 815,800 euros, bidding for Jusepe de Ribera’s “Saint Joseph” realised 588,900 euros and “Lot and his Daughters” by Massimo Stanzione achieved 393,700 euros.
