CLASSIC WATCHES AND RARITIES

Exclusive wristwatches to be auctioned on 3 June 2022

The auction at Dorotheum on 3 June 2022 encompasses more than 160 models of exclusive wristwatches, including Patek Philippe, A. Lange & Söhne, Breguet, Rolex and many other brands.

Sporty
The most valuable watch in the sale, with an estimate between 70,000 and 120,000 euros, is a rare Patek Philippe Nautilus. It owes its sporty look to Gérald Genta, who designed it in the 1970s. A Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Submariner is a special 2009 model of the world’s first waterproof diving wristwatch that celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2003 and was produced with a green bezel. It is valued at 10,000 to 15,000 euros.

Classic
The Breguet wristwatch with moon phase and calendar from 2020 significantly bears the name Classique. It has an estimate between 16,000 and 24.000 euros, and commemorates the achievements of the company’s founder Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747 - 1823). Abraham-Louis Breguet revolutionised horology with numerous inventions, including the tourbillon, the balance spring (which was named after him), and the perpetual calendar. He was the also first to refine dials with guilloché. His work was appreciated by crowned heads - Abraham-Louis Breguet produced a watch for Marie-Antoinette, Czar Nicholas, the Duke of Orleans, the King of England and Napoleon. In 1810, he built the world’s first wristwatch for the Queen of Naples, Caroline Bonaparte.

Cryptic
The Hublot Big Bang Meca-10 “P2P” is the first wristwatch that could be paid only with cryptocurrency. It was issued in 2018 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of bitcoin in a limited edition of only 210 pieces - a reference to the 21 million units of bitcoins available worldwide (estimate 20,000 - 30,000).

Saxon
The Langematik "Sax-0-Mat", with large date and small seconds, from around 2000, is the first automatic wristwatch model by A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte i/SA. It is expected to fetch between 12,000 and 15,000 euros. The large date (for which A. Lange applied for a patent in 1992) developed into a characteristic feature of several timepieces made by the Saxon watch manufacturer.

Formal
The Patek Philippe Gondolo Calendario from around 2010 stands out inter alia for its shape. Its tonneau-shaped case is inspired by the spirit of Art Deco, a significant decade in the manufacturer’s history. The estimate for this wristwatch - the first model from the Gondolo series in this rare form - is 12.000 to 18,000 euros.
