Panoramic Views
Old Master Paintings, Auction 17th October 2012

Pride of place in the Dorotheum Old Master sale, on 17th October, is reserved for Antonio Canal, il Canaletto´s The New Horse Guards from St. James‘s Park, London (estimate: 2 – 3 million Euro). 

Canaletto's works are cherished for their artistic merit and meticulous topographic details, and are considered to be among the best townscapes. The Venetian painter spent ten years of his life in England in the mid 18th Century. The Horse Guards – today a popular tourist destination and known for the annual ”Trooping the Colour” parade celebrated on the occasion of the monarch's birthday – appear several times in Canaletto's œuvre: before the destruction of the old building, as well as during the construction of the new, as seen here. Incidentally, no one owns more paintings by Canaletto than the Queen herself. This particular painting, one of only three for which the painter used a wooden panel, was created around 1752/53, when the new Horse Guards were being built (see separate press release). 

Sometimes referred to as the 'Neapolitan Canaletto', the painter Antonio Joli from Modena contributes another one of this auction's outstanding paintings, a panoramic procession to the Piedigrotta Church in Naples. Against a background of Mount Vesuvius and the Sorrento Peninsula, we are presented with a sweeping procession of aristocrats and courtiers in carriages, soldiers and crowds (€ 200,000 – 300,000).

In addition, the Old Master auction offers a rich selection of excellent works: Joris van der Haagen, renowned for his landscape portraits and panoramic views, is represented by an idealized landscape (€ 350,000 – 450,000) while Jan Brueghel presents an Allegory of the Five Senses (€ 180,000 – 220,000) as well as a Sleeping Diana painted in collaboration with Jan van Balen (€ 150,000 – 180,000).

The Madonna, a subject of lasting appeal, appears in a Madonna and Child, with Saint Anne from the circle of Jacopo da Potormo as well as a recently discovered Allegory of Charity by Guercino, well known to Dorotheum auctions on account of several exceptional sales (both € 200,000 – 300,000). 

Radiance
19th century paintings, Auction 16th October 2012

A hot summer's day by Vasili Andreyevich Golynsky is one of the most important works in the 19th century painting auction on 16th October. The composition shows a woman in Ukrainian costume reclining in an expansive river landscape; in the background a plein-air painter under a white parasol is depicted from the behind. According to family tradition, the painting – which was acquired from the artist's heirs in 1960 – is supposed to show the artist himself and his wife. The choice of intense and decorative colours is typical of the St. Petersburg-trained Golynsky (€ 100,000 – 140,000). 

Federico del Campo's works are likewise characterised by an exceptional radiant palette as well as by an almost hyper-realistic attention to detail. His views of Venice are considered to be some of the best from the late 19th Century; the Dorotheum auction presents his 1888 Courtyard of the Doge´s Palace in Venice (€ 80,000 – 120,000). The selection is further enlivened by a rustically picturesque Arrival of the Train by Gerolamo Induno and an elegant portrait painting by Giovanni Boldini . (€ 100,000 – 150,000).

Austrian paintings are distinguished by a strong showing by Tina Blau, Josef Lauer, Thomas Ender or Friedrich Gauermann. Theodor von Hörmann depicts a Tavern near Znaim surrounded by sunlit fields (€ 20,000 – 25,000). Emil Jakob Schindler's museum-quality large-scale View of Ragusa dating to 1890, measures 140 x 180 cm and has been valued between 250,000 and 350,000 Euro.

Lyrical
Works of Art, Auction 17th and 18th October 2012

The silver auction shines with a pair of French style candelabra from St. Petersburg, of excellent workmanship and dating to 1820. The plinth is decorated with musical trophies and a woman playing the lyre. This instrument's curving shape later became a Biedermeier favourite and is seen in the production of similarly-named furniture, including in  the upcoming furniture auction, an Empire Periof 'Lyre' writing desk, made in Vienna or Budapest around  1810/15 and resting on lion feet. Its decoration includes two gilt-winged sphinxes  (€ 40,000 – 60,000). The auction also features an ornamental Parisian writing desk from the middle of the 19th Century (€ 100,000 – 140,000).

Around 1800,  travellers would carry their own coffee-service in a small case. Some such examples can be found at the glass and porcelain auction. A service of six parts from the Imperial Manufactory Vienna is decorated with designs by Angelika Kauffmann. The coffee-pot is inscribed with a warning cautioning lovers that its contents might keep Cupid awake.…(€ 36,000 – 60,000)

Jewellery by renowned firms remains in constant demand as it combines lasting value with the distinction of a famous name. The jewellery auction features two such pieces: a "bow" brooch (1900/1910) with a total of 7ct of diamonds by Tiffany and a 1934 “Tutti Frutti” brooch by Cartier London (€ 20,000 – 30,000, $ 22,000 – 34,000)
