Dorotheum Review 2022

2022 was a year characterized by a strong art market, high demand, record-breaking auctions, million-euro hammer prices, significant increases in value and record-breaking prices. In our Classic Week in May, a painting of the Penitent Magdalen by Titian, which was thought to have been lost, reached 4.8 million euros – the highest hammer price of the year for a painting in Austria and the second highest in the entire German-speaking world. In the Autumn, a Madonna and Child by Giovanni Bellini and Assistant was sold for 1.4 million euros. A Porsche Carrera GT built in 2005, the last analog sports car to date, also topped the million-euro mark, with the hammer coming down at 1.035 million euros. Contemporary and Modern Art were also in high demand in 2022. Our Contemporary Week in November was Dorotheum's best auction week ever. The sales achieved some of the highest prices on the international market, amongst others, for a work entitled Animale Immaginario by one of the most important exponents of the Italian 1960s Avant-Garde, Carla Accardi. In the most successful jewellery auction ever held in Dorotheum, which took place in December, haute joaillerie from well-known brands such as Cartier, Bulgari, Boucheron and Van Cleef & Arpels were much in demand.
