Frans Francken - The man forced to choose between virtues and vices

The Old Masters auction at Dorotheum in Vienna on 21 April 2010 produced a sensational result. Frans Francken’s opulent heaven and hell scenario “The Man between Virtues and Vices” was a triumphant success, selling for €7,022,300. This was the highest price paid for an Old Masters work at an international auction in 2010, and a world record for the artist. It is also the most expensive painting ever auctioned in Austria and the most costly by an Old Master in the entire German and Italian-speaking countries.
