Old Master Paintings | April 2016 | Preview at Palais Dorotheum

The Nativity from Hans Memling’s workshop, an example of early Netherlandish painting, will feature in the April auction and is a highlight of the auction week. Originating from the workshop of <link en auctions current-auctions kataloge list-lots-detail auktion lotid lot>Hans Memling, the painting is distinct from the collective style of late medieval painters’ studios and points the way for future research on the Memling workshop.
Another highlight is the Bird Trap by Pieter Brueghel the Younger. 127 versions of this composition are known, of which only 46 (including the present work) are believed to be by the artist. The rest were painted by his assistants or by followers. The sheer number of versions is testament to the popularity of this composition, which is today one of the most familiar works in the Brueghel family’s oeuvre.
Other significant paintings to be offered at auction on the 19th April are works by Jacopo de Sellaio, Guido Reni, Luca Giordano, Huybrecht Bueckeleer, Andrea Vaccaro, Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, il Guercino, Johann Georg Platzer, Anthony van Dyck and Hendrik van Balen I.
