Old Masters | October 2015 | Pieter Coecke van Aelst

Pieter Coecke van Aelst (Aelst 1502 - Brussels 1550) was a prodigiously talented and successful painter, even in his own lifetime. A member of the Lukas Guild in Antwerp, he was specialised in the production of devotional images and triptychs for domestic settings. The “Adoration of the Magi” by Pieter Coecke van Aelst will be among the lots at the “Old Masters” auction in the Vienna Dorotheum on 20 October. This triptych is among the most important works of Flemish Mannerism. The triptych by Pieter Coecke van Aelst belonged to the estate of Leopold V, Archduke of Austria, who resided in Herrenstein Castle near Baden, not far from Vienna.
