Preview 19th Century Paintings and Works of Art | Palais Dorotheum | Auctions 28 and 24 April 2025
A panorama of Austrian and international painting of the 19th century will be presented at the auction on the 28th April 2025 at Dorotheum.
In his inimitable style, Ivan Aivazovsky captures the atmosphere of sea, sky and light in his romantic View of Constantinople by moonlight (estimate €250,000 and 300,000). The figures and fruit trees in Theodor von Hörmann's Spring painting from 1886 glow in vibrant colours (€35,000-60,000). Olga Wisinger-Florian shows a detailed still life of Wildflowers (€25,000-30,000). Highlights include works by the Biedermeier painter Friedrich Gauermann, such as Beim Hufschmied (€80,000-140,000) and Ein Stier kämpft mit einem Bären (€70,000-90,000), which emphasise the dramatic wildness of nature. Other outstanding works include A Young Lady with Wreath of Flowers around her Shoulders by Wladyslaw Czachórski (€140,000-180,000) and a scene with Runway Horses by Józef von Brandt (€120,000-180,000).
One of the highlights of the Furniture, Works of Art, Glass & Porcelain auction on the 24th April 2025 is a masterfully crafted Empire lady's writing desk of museum quality and aristocratic provenance, attributed to the Viennese ebenist Johann Gallmayer.
