Preview Old Masters | Palais Dorotheum Vienna | Auction 29 April 2025

Art historical discoveries by some of the most famous artists of their time will dominate the Old Masters auction at Dorotheum on the 29th April 2025. The lively atmosphere in Renaissance Florence, characterised by artistic competition, is reflected in the auction just as impressively as the ground-breaking artistic innovations during the same period in the Netherlands.

A particular highlight is Luca Cambiaso's late mythological work ‘Diana and Callisto’, which probably belonged to the collection of Emperor Rudolf II. Raphael's fine ink study of a head (around 1507) provides fascinating insights into his artistic development in dialogue with Leonardo and Michelangelo. A preliminary study from Leonardo's workshop, dated 1504, also attracts attention (€100,000–50,000).

Outstanding is a rare complete cycle of the ‘Four Seasons’ by Joos de Momper and Jan Brueghel the Elder (estimate €600,000-800,000), which masterfully combines landscape and figurative narrative. Also noteworthy is Herri met de Bles' pioneering work of landscape painting with apocalyptic scenes (€80,000–120,000).
