8 March 1931, Lollar (Germany)

Heinz Mack is a German artist who founded the influential ZERO movement in 1957 together with Otto Piene which Günther Uecker later joined in 1961. He is known for his light art, optical art and kinetic art. He lives and works in Düsseldorf.

Mack was born in Lollar, Hessen. He attended the art academy in Düsseldorf, as well as studying philosophy at the University in Cologne from 1953. Mack’s early works were paintings of black and white parallel lines. These were followed by works in which he tested the power of light and movement using light reliefs and light dice in polished aluminium.

For his large-scale, open air works Heinz Mack created light rotors and columns, such as the columns he placed in the Sahara desert, and his Light and Movement room created for the industry exhibition in Berlin.

Heinz Mack took part in the documenta exhibits II and III and exhibited at the 1970 Venice Biennalle with Thomas Lenk, Georg Karl Pfahler and Günther Uecker. He has also created many sculptures for public spaces.
