Pier Paolo Calzolari - vendere e comprare opere

1943, Bologna (Italy)

Pier Paolo Calzolari is an Italian concept artist based in Lisbon. Media in which he works include painting, sculpture, performance and videos. He is a leading international figure in the Arte Povera movement.

Pier Paola Calzolari spent his youth in Venice. The city’s mysterious light and reflective marble were a strong influence, and his observations encouraged him to illustrate the perfect white.

He was professor of painting at the Accademia di Bellini Arti in Urbino from 1966–1970.

During the 1970s, Calzolari created monochrome surfaces linked to objects and creatures. He developed an original gestural and richly coloured style of painting in the 1980s which was characteristic of Transavantgarde, the Italian version of Neo-expressionism.

He was one of the artists represented at Documenta IV in 1972, and Documenta IX in 1992.

Calzolari’s works are popular at Dorotheum. His 1980 work Mothia Rs sold at auction there in 2015 for an impressive €161,600.
